By Michael Becker News Reporter And North Vancouver RCMP investigators believe the male suspects, Squamish Nation members living on the Capilano reserve, are being protected by a code of silence on the part of some band members. Said North Vancouver RCMP Staff Sgt. Ron Babcock, ‘‘We determined that there were several people in the community who have evidence to offer regarding our three suspects and for some reason the witnesses are not com- ing forward. ““Now there cculd be various reasons for this, one being that they are afraid to; two, that they are related to these people; and the third possibility is that they just don’t want to get involved.’” Jovito Vaidueva Baguna, 36, was beaten to death with a hockey stick on Oct. 24, Danilo Crisostomo, 35, was robbed and assaulted. The two sailors were on shore leave when they were befriended by three men while drinking at the Coach House Inn. The victims were offered a ride back to their ship, but were instead driven to a forested area near 26th Street and Lloyd Avenue where they were at- tacked. The police arrested three North Vancouver men Nov.4 in connec- tion with the murder investigation. The three were questioned and released. Said Babcock, ‘We've asked for the assistance of the (Squamish) peacekeepers and they've made an effort, but they’ve run into the same dif- ficulties as we have. People are jusi not talking any longer." Said Squamish Chief Philip Joe, “TI kaven’t followed it too closely. You hear a Jot of things and I don’t know how much of it is true and I haven’t run it down. Ff don’t know.”’ Meanwhile Squamish Nation peacekeeper Sam George said the reserve is rife with rumor. But he said ‘‘We’re just as lost as the RCMP. We’re not trained to do this (murder investigation). All we know is hearsay. Maybe there are some people they (the suspects) talked to, I don’t know. ae “gavagetous Uravey. ity RCMP SKETCHES of the three suspects in murder investiga- tion.
