‘tee time: the new corrections philosophy

NO ONE should have been surprised to hear that a multi-
ple rape artist had been let out uf jail to have a few games
of goif. For there we were seeing the New Canada in ac-
tion. Golf for cons. Trendyland in exceisis.

The legal system has gone mad,
as my Sate friend Les Bewley made
clear years ago. ‘*Rehabilitation’’
is in, punishment out. The cons
grow beards and Afros and have a
Bible of Rights that’s longer than
the Charter of © ‘ghts.

The latest bit of fun, | hear, is
that prison guards are to be taken
out of uniform and dressed in
blue blazers and ties so that the
inmates (or outmates, as the case
may be) won't feel upset.

Uniforms are bad for morale. [f
he’s not happy, Bill Sikes might
refuse to eat his bacon and eggs.
He might not even study foz his
arts degree.

One had to wonder, too, about
that Reyat trial. Here we have a
Sikh whose spare-time activities
included making bombs that could
blow up planes and did in fact
blow up two baggage handlers.

But when he was sentenced toa
phoney 10 years — he could be
out of jail before your kid is out
of diapers — the judge’s com-
ments sounded like a job refer-
ence. With such a testimonial our
inan should have no troubie get-
ting work as a banker.

The judge emphasized that
Reyat is a person of ‘‘remarkably
good character, a devout family
man and a hard worker."’

What a nity he got mixed up
with bomb-making, he being ‘‘an
otherwise decent person.’’ Oh
well, we all make mistakes.
Perhaps Reyat thought he was just
helping with a little firework
display.

Not to worry, though. This de-
cent person will soon be out hav-
ing himself a game of golf, and
the prison cooks (sorry, I meant
the house of correction chefs) will

peddled by every minister of
justice and solicitor general since

Trudeau mob, who stated in 1971:

“We have decided from now on
to stress the rehabilitation of the
individuals rather than the safety
of society.”’

That’s what they've been doing
ever since, except that ‘trehab"’
has become an old wives’ tale —
as many a policeman and prison
guard will tell you. But Ottawa
blinds the public with nonsensical
Statistics (parole is 99% effective,
etc.). It ignores what happens
when it’s not effective.

Someone should taik about
“rehabilitation’’ to the relatives of
paroled murderers who killed
again. Or to women who have
been assaulted by decent persons
who were out on passes.
