18 - Sunday, March 19, 1989 - North Shore News FASHION NORTH VAN SEMINAR Home sewers helped with silks and satin A DYNAMIC new Siiks & Satins seminar has been developed by North Vancouver's Hazel Boyd of Tex-Mar Seminars. If you’ve got the sewing machine, Boyd has the know-how and is prepared to give the home sewer and designer a fast and easy education in the use of silk. Boyd offers valuable tips on how to per- sonalize patterns with designer looks. She calls her method KISS: Keep it sophisticated but simple. *“We cover all of the ramifica- tions of sewing with silk fabric — right from the types of silks avail- able ali the way down to par- ticulars on what types of silks are best suited to what styles of clothing,”* says Boyd. A former Canadian director for Knit and Stretch sewing, Boyd boasts extensive experience in pat- tern and dress design, having stud- ied three years under European in- struction in pattern drafting and haute couture. She’s also tie author of two sewing books: Couture Action Knits and, hot off the press, the revised edition of Silks and Satins. With the current swell of interest in ons-of-a-kind handmade gar- ments, business is booming. Terrifying though the thought might be at first, Boyd says you can make your own silk lingerie, Because the fabric requirements are so small (only about one metre for a teddy), why not treat yourself to the very best fabrics? Flannelette is fine, but there’s nothing quite like the feei of silks and satin. Treat yourself to a lace-trimmed teddy in a creamy silk charmeuse for just under $30. And none of the garments sport that dreaded ‘‘loving-hands-at- home’’ look. Al! it takes is a little instruction and confidence. “A lot of women just aren’t familiar with the types of silk fabrics,’’ says Boyd, who is doing her best to de-mystify luxury fabrics that have a reputation for being hard to handle. Even if you’re far too nervous to tackle genuine silk, the instruction is still worthwhile. “Silk has been copied in syn- thetic form, so a lot of the tech- niques that work with silk can also |NEW...| SPRING FASHIONS : & FABRICS : H EXCITING COLORS & STYLES : CELEBRATING * LARGER SIZES WITH COLOR & FLAIR IMPO & JASMIN Reg. to $85 HOW $39%,, $4999 Simply Grand Clothing Ca. 4695 Central Blvd., Burnaby t (% block East of 15th & tonsdale : Woodwards Metrotown} : ALL SALES FINAL eosed Wel) : b 10:00AM-6:00PH ing Avallable 5 , 439-1313, eal Al fashione noluging Oa CNEW SPRING ARRIVALS” 20-70% off NEWS photo Nail Lucente "980-9712 | Pe + 4 yee . 7 “ELT SEWING WITH silk isn’t as difficult as most people think.
