DEAR MISS MANNERS —
Shouidn’t the people who
are in charge of a relative
have the decency to notify
others of that person's
death, especially if they in-
herit all belongings and
money?

I worked with a woman for 11
years and wrote to her after I
retired to another city. My ‘ettecs,
cards and gifts were in her home
weeks after the death. I called and
was told she had died and wes
buried. .

There should have been some
kind of notice piven me, us J was
devoted to her — FE was her second
mother for years. 1 always reply to
messages or Inquiries after a loss

and thank the people who cared

enough to say a few words on a
sympathy card. Am I wrong?

GENTLE READER — Of
course you are not wrong to res-
pond to expressions of sympathy,
but that is not quite the same thing
as knowing whom to notify of a
death.

Kidney fund raising

DR. PAUL Keown, director, B.C.
Transplant Society, was the guest
speaker, at the star-studded lunch
on. March I, 1988 at the Hotel
Vancouver. .

Keown spoke on the. advances
being made in kidney transplants
in B.C. Since. 1985 the number of
kidney: transplants has quadrupled
in B.C. from 35 in 1985 to 139 in
1987. Kidney transplants are done
at St.. Paul’s Hospital, Vancouver

even a good friend may be

unfortunate accident and not let it
inhibit your expressions of sym-
pathy to the heirs.

attorney and his secretary as a
thank-you gesture?

generous out-of-court settlement."
But she would prefer that you
preserve a businesslike demeanor
and write them both or each a
gracious letter expressing your ap-
preciation in a more intelligible
