Done properly, and with care there is no adverse affect from root pruning. Like pruning, root pruning can be good for your tree, particularly if the root in question is one which is constantly being hit by a lawnmower or run over by acar, Far better the root be removed entirely than constantly be dam- aged by outside sources. Volunteers growing from surface roots are a real problem for many people and they are particularly common with some varieties of trees. Poplars are particularly pro- ne to this type of regeneration and it is also common with some cher- ries and sumacs. If this is a problem in your lawn or garden, pull the suckers out if you can and cut the root below the ground surface. Avoid using lawn weed killers. While they may kill the sucker growth, they can also have adverse effects on the parent tree. When cutting surface roots from a desirable tree, always try to have a very clean cut on the tree side and pull as much of the cut stock as possible. This will prevent undesirable suckering. While root pruning can be done without damage (o the tree, the indiscriminate cutting of roots can create very serious problems. Both the health and the stability of the tree can be depreciated severely. Many of my dead tree and fallen tree calls come from new or recent construction where root damage has been severe.
