May 2, 1984 - North Shore News Contractors fined for tax evasion FOUR INSULATION subcontractors have been fined a total of $77,000 in provincial courts in Sur- rey and North Vancouver for income tax evasion. These insulators failed to report income totalling $441,089.65 over the years 1976 to 1981, evading tederal income taxes totalling $85,189.26. In addition to the fines of $77,000, the four insulators owe a further $306,000 to the Department of National Revenue, Taxation on ac- count of both federal and provincial income taxes, penalties and interest. Gordon H. Gambler of 213-126 32th Street in North Vancouver pleaded guilty to evading taxes on tncome of $46,665.34 received during 1980 and 1981. Provincial Court Judge J.K. Shaw im- posed a fine of $3,000 with the alternate of three months in jail. Mr. Gambler. still owes approximately $43,000 in back taxes. Mario Robert Cormier of 19317-76th Avenue in Surrey was found guilty of making false or deceptive statements in his 1976 to 1981 Income Tax Returns by failing to report additional income of $240,090.80. Provincial court judge E.T. Scarlett imposed a fine of $62,000 with the alter- nate of one year in jail. In ad- dition to the $62,000 fine, Mr. Courmier still! owes ap- proximately $190,000 in back taxes, penalties and interest. Lloyd Eugene Cavanaugh of 14246-104th Avenue in Surrey was found guilty of evadingsincome taxes on in- come received by him totall- ing $65,467.01 during the years 1979 to 1981. Provin- cial Court Judge W.G. Mac- Donald imposed a fine of $5,000 with the alternate of four months in jail. Lloyd Cavanaugh still owes approx- imately $38,000 in back taxes, penalties and interest. Robert H. Cavanaugh of 13396-89A Avenue in Surrey pleaded guilty to evading taxes on inc¢ome oft $88,366.50 received during 1978 to 1981. He did not file Income Tax Returns during this period. Provincial Court Judge N. Collingwood tm- posed a fine of $7,000 with the alternate of nine months in jail.
