THE GERMAN School on the North Shore celebrates its 10th anniver: . It is one of many langu schools that is maintained an ethnic group who wants to preserve the cultural heritage of their home country for their children. The North Shore German School opened its doors in 1974 to 36 students. Today student enrolment has reach- ed 138. The principal of the school, Trude Jackisch, is assisted by nine qualified and very dedicated teachers. One of the more interesting facts is that only one third of the students attending the school are German speaking, while two thirds are English speaking. In celebration of their 10th Heart leaps WHAT scientific achievements have been made regarding the heart? Canadian scientists have developed pacemakers to control heart rhythm, con- ducted artery transplants to improve blood supply to the heart muscle, and replaced human heart valves. They have played an im- portant role in pioneering Coronary Care Units, in con- ducting surgery to correct one of the defects resulting in *‘blue babies’’, and in perfec- ting hypothermia, a blood cooling technique, invaluable to modern heart surgery. World-wide scientists have performed heart and valve transplants, developed = ar- uficial heart-lung machines, and artificial heart valves. To the teachers, who tackle the task of drumming basic language skills, which in- cludes the ever-boring gram- mar, into not always recep- tive heads. To the principal of the school, Trude Jackisch, who for the last ten years has spent many hours organizing, co-ordinating, negotiating, teaching and taking care of numerous jobs behind the scenes that have resulted in a smooth running operation.
