WHILE MOST kids are going to camp this summer to paddle around in canoes and make leather wallets, there is a group of youngsters on the North Shore slapping balls on hard wooden floors’ or hitting them over nets with their hands. They'll be attending the All- Star Basketball and Volleyball Camps, being offered by Dan Miscisco at various locations on the North Shore, getting top- notch instruction in their respective sport. Miscisco, author of In- novative Basketball, has been running the camps for 12 years now, and has managed to attract some top coaches, including Bob swim, -Mohnski, recently appointed U.B.C. basketball coach and former coach of the Argyle Pipers. More than 600 boys and girls have attended the camps, which, according to Miscisco, are fun but em- phasize sound = skill development. The main idea, he says, is to form a positive attitude towards excellence. Par- ticipants learn what is needed to be = successful, namely hard work and commitment. There are three basketball camps, one for rookies, a junior and a senior camp, with varying times for all three The rookie camp is for students entering Grades 6 to 8, and has a heavy em- phasis on the basics. Con- siderable time is spent on contests. At the junior level, for those entering Grades 9 and 10, skills and scrimmaging are stressed, while the super senior camps stress team- work, involve ~ considerable scrimmaging and feature a major ~ competitive final evening. The volleyball camps are also divided imto rookie, junior and senior. Some of the topics covered include conditioning, setting, bumping, serving, TesSi of spiking and blocking, digging, diving, rolling. and offensive and defensive play patterns. The volicyball camps are for girls only, while both boys and girls camps are held for basketball. The five day sessions are three and a half hours in length and cost $45. The final basketball sessions start August 16, while there are two more volleyball sessions, August 16 and August 23. For further information call D.
