District has a new fire chief,
effective August 9.

Robert Walker, currently
deputy fire chief of Calgary
Fire Department, takes over
from District Fire Chief Bob
McDenald.

McDonald, who is 49, has
been with the department
for 29 years. He has been fire
chief for the past 20 years
and at the time of his ap-
pointment was Canada’s
youngest ever fire chief.

McDonald gives poor
health as his reason for
retiring two years early. He
will be leaving the fire
department August 2C ana
taking accumulated leave
while on salary. possibly
until the end of the year.

His successor is 52 and has

when he started as a rookie
firefighter.

Walker progressed
through the ranks to become
deputy chief in 1979. He has
had extensive training in fire
science and administration.

The municipality took
several weeks deciding its
choice of fire chief from the
16 applicants for the job,
with the aid of a professional

Management consulting
firm.

Walker, who is married
and has one daughter, is a
member of the Canadian and
International Association of
fire chiefs and of the Fire
Marshals’ Association of
North America.
