It is one of the largest vessels ever to be handled in Burrard Inlet. (EHsworth Dickson photo) By VIC HODSON When Keith Broeder, superintendent of the Saskatchewan Wheat Pool, 801 Low Level, North Vancouver, answered our question “Who owns Saskatchewan Wheat Pool?” “70,000 Saskatchewan Wheat farmers,’ his reply was: and he called it the largest cooperative in the world. He may be right. We won't argue with him, but we will! tell you this. The Sask. Wheat Pool employs 150 people over three shifts every working day. They handle some $320 million worth of grain an- nually — of which $3 million stays with the Pool. Their annual payroll on the North Shore amounts to approxi- mately $3.5 million: repairs and maintenance put another $3.5 million into North Shore coffers, and taxes, insurance and licences add a further $1.5 million to the kitty, not to mention a paltry half million” for utilities. How's that for corporate citizen. The Pool has a capacity to handle cight million bushels and it is very nearly full right a good now, according to Keith Broeder, but he says that he could still accept more grain cars if it were not for the congestion on North Shore railway tracks. Moreover, of course there is, at the time of writing, a grain workers strike in Thunder Bay and the railways are niggling about the ridiculously low Crow's Nest Pass rates for grain and coal for export. Broeder told us that his people can fully load a really big ship in six eight-hour days, and he assured us that the Pool's safety is excellent. “There is no potential danger to local residents concerning any dust ex- polsion — if it ever occurs,” he stressed.
