north shore news Roc With pair of weekend wins It was a productive weekend for the West Vancouver Rockets as they squeaked by the North Van Stingers 7-6 Saturday at Karen Magnussen and then, in a four pointer at West Van on Sunday, hung on for a 4-3 victory over the PoCo Blazers to take. over sole possession of first place in Metro League standings. Saturday's wide open, seesaw battle at Karen Magnussen became a goal- tenders’ duel between the Rockets’ Mark Mees and the Stingers’ Mark Orlene in the game's Closing minutes. Tied 2-2 at the end of one period, and 4-4 at the end of two, the Rockets jumped into a 6-4 lead carly in the third period on goals by Barry Penman and Graig Harman. But the Stingers battled back with Miles Merrifield GM creating 2900 Canadian jo scoring to make it 6-5 and then Dave Berto, with his third goal of the game, racking up the cqualizer midway through the period. With only six minutes remaining, Brian Chatfield scored the game winner for the Rockets, directing a Steve Stuart pass on net which deflected in off a Stinger defender's skate. In the final minutes both teams had = several good scoring chances but equally good goaltending at both ends prevented the Rockets from getting an insurance goal and the Stingers from the equalizer. Other scorers in the game were Al Wilson, Dan Corrigan, Jeff Durrant and Dave Harvey for the Rockets, and Gerry Knapp and Mike Klausen for the Stingers. On Sunday at West Van two third period goals by Dan Corrigan and _ goal- tending heroics by Randy Smith enabled the Rockets to post a 4-3 win over the PoCo Blazers and take over first place in the standings. The two teams traded goals in the opening stanza with Al Wilson banging home a Jim Bahr rebound just fifty seconds into the game, and then PoCo ets take top spot evening the score midway through the period. The Rockets notched the only goal in the second period, coming off the stick of Barry Penman at the two minute mark and giving the West Van team a 2-1 lead heading into the third period. PoCo made it a 2-2 tie just thirty seconds into the final frame, but the Rockets regained the lead three minutes later on a goal by Corrigan from Jeff Durrant, and then a repeat by the duo two minutes later proved to be fhe game winner. It took the Blazers only _ twenty seconds to pull within a goal again, and then for most of the remaining fifteen minutes of the gamo applied relenticss pressure but were unable to get the equalizer past Smith in the Rocket net.
