A.L.F.A. (Anonima Lambarda Fabbrica Automobili) was formed in 1909 from the remnants of the Societa Italiana ° Automobili Darraca, sii which had manufactured Darracqs under license since 1906. The early cars were quite conventional, and had no. sporting pretensions. They were designed by Guiseppe Merosi, who left Bianchi to join the new firm. Wien Nicola Romeo took over the factory in 1915, priorities changed, and post- war models, marketed as Alfa-Romeos, were true sports cars. | The firm’s first racing victory was at Mugello in 1920; a contest won by Camperi, driving a special 40/60. A racing version of the three litre six cylinder RL ‘series won the Targa - Florio in 1923, and Campari won the Grand Prix at Lyons in 1924 with with the new straight eight supercharged P2, designed by Vittorio Jano. This early success was enforced when Alfa Romeos were declared World Champions in 1925. From 1926, Jano’s designs became world famous, and his single and twin overhead cam engines in 1500 and 1750cc form won every major sporting event, with the exceptions of the 1928- 1930 Le Mans competitions. But Alfa was victorious again from 1931 to 1934, when Jano’s further designs incorporated a 2.3 litre straight ‘eight supercharged engine. Dimensions of these engines varied widely. Some were bored out to 2.6 litres, producing 165 bhp. This engine was used in the Grand Prix Alfa Romeo of 1931, known as_ the “Monza”, and raced for the factory by Scuderia Ferrari. The international turmoils of 1933 influenced Alfa's fortunes, and the Italian State appropriated the company's resources to manufacture” aircraft engines. However, racing car production was allowed to continue.
