ENE Fo oneenred etic D ok 44 — Sunday, Avgust 20, 1989 - North Shore News COUNTRY MUSIC FESTIVAL Lynden fair is homespun fun HER2®’S A tip that you'll have to file for next summer, but I think it’s better to pass it along now while it’s fresh in my mind. Lynden, Washington , produces an annual State Fair and brings in some top flight country and western entertainers. The fair is fan! Unlike the PNE, it’s all homespun and faraily criented. Pve never veer so many little kids, family groups and expectant moms milling through a fairground. The animal exhibits are vast pet- zoos — most of the beasts - Sq have been 4-H raised so they’re used to getting the hands-on treatment. Lots of moms and babies. For a small fair, it’s got nearly as many food outlets as the PNE, and the prices are reasonable. Because of the Dutch history of Lynden you’ll find a few European touches in the food — for exam- ple, one variety of hot dog is European sausage with sauerkraut and onions. Another popular concoction is “Elephant Ears’? — a huge thin _strudel. i had a big hamburger, smothered in onions as tradition demands — $3. There’s a midway with all-day tide tickets going for $10, $8 on selected days, and your admission to the grounds entities you to all the shows, which in- clude demolition derbies, chariot races and gravel truck races as well as the entertainers. Here’s the reai tip, though. Radio station CKWX has had a pramotional trip to the fair for a couple of years. They run buses down for fans to see the best country singers. For $11.30, total, you get the bus down, admission to the grounds and, of course, the stage show. Such a bargain. This year, 10 of us got together and went down to see Don Williams. Janie Fricke was playing on another night, and last year one ty the stars was Barbara Mandrell. Try seeing any of those at the Queen E. for $11.30. Watch for this next August. Visited Whistler for the weekend — first time in a couple of years. Pars tor contort nd pocket managed to explode @ I was amazed at the changes — the shops are something else! As you may know, the Queen Mary (now a floating hotel) and the Spruce Goose (Howard Hughes’ ; braiastorm) are side by side at the Long Beach dock. I’ve stayed aboard the Queen Mary a couple of times and always had a vague feeling of disap- pointment about the way the reconstruction was handied. The Spruce Goose display has been well done. The ‘‘news” is that the pair of them are now being managed by the Disney company. 7’m anxious to see what improvements Disney will make to the Queen.
