Pioneer recalls old cabin
on Mosquito Creek bank

THE CAPILANO area may have lost a number of its his-
toric buildings through the years, but there are plenty of
memories kept alive by those oldtimers who enjoyed hiking

in these parts many years ago.

Local resident Bob Somerville,
87, could take you down to the
northeastern corner of Highland
Elementary School property and
show you the focation near Mos
quito Creek of the abandoned log
cabin that he and some buddies
discovered in about 1920.

The young fellows — about nine
of them — called themselves the
“Grandview Gang"’ and made a
practice of coming over from Van-
couver to visit the cabin practically
every spring and summer weekend
for the next four years.

“We would take a Vancouver
strectcar to the ferry, cross over
and then take the Number 3 car to
Capilano. From there we walked

up the hill,” recalls Somerville,
who was about (9 ai the time.

They fixed up the cabin and
brought over the essentials of ba-
chelor existence, a gramophone,
some lanterns and a stove,

**And we all learned to cook,””
says Somerville. :

When they weren't ‘‘loafing’’
around the cabin, the men used it

as a base for their exploration of

the countryside.
