WEST Vancouver’s commu-
nity spirit is present any day
of the year, but tomorrow is
the day to celebrate it.

“ Community Day in West
Van, originally called May
Day, began in 1931, and to
this day continues to be orga-
nized and run by a group of
dedicated volunteers.

Wings and Things is. the
theme. of this ___ year’s
Community Day.

The Master’s Mile Road
Race kicks off the day’s activi-
ties'at 9 30 a.m. at the com-

back to the centre, where the
rest of the day’s events take

Look for five different
stages featuring dancing and
music, sports and. games, a

“There are only 8.500 of
these herons lefi, and the pop-
ulation is declining at the rate
of 1% ev var,” said Dick
Beard of the Wild Bird Trust
(WBT} of B.C., which is based
in the mudilats.

In fact, the waterfowl have
been “blue-listed” which in
wildlife protection parlance
means they fall within the
provincial guidelines for a
spe hat is sensitive or vul-
nerable. They are running out
of habitat.

industries such as Canadian
Occidental Petroleum, Sterling
Pulp Chemicals, Neptune Bulk
Terminals and Chevron, they
are establishing programs and
raising awareness to help the
herons and thousands of other

June 8 is Oceans Day —
first declared in 1992 during
the Earth Summit in Rio de
Janciro. [ts purpose is to inspire
people to take better care of
marine habitats.

This year, it’s even more sig-
nificant because the United
Nations has proclaimed 1998
the International Year of the
Ocean.
