Dear Editor: Further to my May 31 letter to the North Shore News, ! would like to elaborate on the theme for the millenniam monument on the top of Mount Fromme in North Vancouver District. We all know of the tremendous impact that colonization and occupation of North America has had on the indigenous peoples of this con- anent. In being marginalized by an over- whelmingly new population, native tribes lost their lands, their traditional ways of life and, to an extent, their spirit. Coping with these new realities was difficult and painful and, in many ways these hardships continue to this day. Some attempts have been made to help in this transition but resources dedicated only to material well-being is now enough. For a people, the most important compo- nent of their earthly existence is their guiding light, their philosophy, religion or explanation of their world around them. north shore news MAIL Box A monumental proposal Destroy this belief svstem and vou create a situarion thar is ripe for tragedy. Fortunately, remnants of First: Nauens traditional ways remain: their love of the cycles of nature: their caring, communal ways; their enjoyment of land, sea and sky — all of this within the con- text Of their uniqee spirituality. I believe that a major monument dedicated to the Great Spirit and spirits of these aborigi- nal peoples would become an inspiration and a mecea for native and non-native alike. The West Coast is particularly suited for this theme as there has always been a mystique surround: ing the traditiona! customs of the tribes of this area. Symbols are important and pride in enc’s heritage is essential if we are to look forward with optimism to the dawn of this new millen- nium. Here is our chance ta demonstrate this pride. D. Baron Burnaby Zero tolerance for bylaw abuse Dear Editor: Shame, shame, shame! (North Vancouver District manager investigated, June 7 News.) North Vancouver District has the most progressive and comprehensive environmental byfaws in British Columbia applying to all district resi- ents including (environmen- tal protection manager) Mel . Kotyk. Ed Many North Vancouver residents have at various times inadvertently run afoul of this new bylaw, Mr. Kotyk drafted the dis- trict bylaw. Our excuse was ignorance of the bylaw. Mr. Koryk has enforced it with great authority, knowledge and zeal. While the rest of the dis- trict’s residents should adhere to the process, Mr. Kotyk ale ends July 10, 199838 CANADIAN. Mr. Katyk’s only response seems to be to question the cost to taxpayers for investi- gating his self-serving behav- ior. 1 would rather see my tax dollars going to preventing this type of abuse. Mr. Kotvk should be judged by his own environmental standard: zero tolerance Rolf Rybak North Vancouver | | | | | Friday, July 3, 1998 — North Shore News — 9 Community coverage applauded Dear Editor: This is a belated thank you for the cover- ave vow gave St. fohn Ambulance’s North Shore Branch grand opening on April 9.
