Friday, December 19, 1997 — Morth Shore: News - 47 -m— north shore news JAMES Bond fans car expect to see their hero, once again, piloting a BMW — actually two BMWs. According to an agreement negotiated between BMW and Metro Goldwyn Mayer/EON Productions, secret agent 097 chooses a BMW 750iL as his official car and tides the new BMW Cruiser motorcycle, the R 1200 C,.in the 18th Bond film Tomorrow Never Dies. This marks the second time that 007 has used vehicles from BMW. In the 1995 film, GoldenEye, he drove a BMW Z3 roadster as his official car. The recently signed contract is sinilar to the one negotiated for that film. In this year’s action film, che classic 4x4 from the Rover Group, BMW's subsidiary, makes its appearance as well. Bond enthusi- asts will not be disappointed with the wild chase berween the 4x4 and the Cruiser, since Bond is handcuffed to his partner through- out the chase. Excitement continues when Bond’s oppo- nents try to break open his Jong-wheelbase BMW 7 Series model. Their plans are ham- # AUTO ond back Deflating some myths behind a Bimmer pered with a clever 007 trick and the 750iL’s special safety technology. However, the leg- endary chief engineer Mr. *Q™ has installed special Bond requirements, which may play a small part as well. No flow of money will cross between either party with this contract. Among spe- cialists this is called “cross promotion.” BMW will draw attention to the tifm through its advertisements of both models, and the film will help promote BMW's cars, and espe- cially the new R 1200 C motorcycle. Several BMW 7 Series were subjected to costly and comprehensive modifications in order to meet the requirements of the stunt scenes — in tests and during the shooting. BMW engineers worked hand in hand with special-effects experts since safety is a top pri- ority. This applies, as well, ro the R 1200 C which endured qvite a ride on unusual and exotic paths in Har iurg and Bangkok where some of the movie wis filmed. Tomorrow Never Dies premiered on December 9th in London and opens today in cinemas in North America. In its new position paper, aAlntosmoliles In Canada, CAA addresses the three major myths. “Whenever — there’s a media story about pollution or about global warming, there's a picture of a car. But cars create only about 10% of global warming gases. They are a part of the problem, but they are just one small cle- ment,” CAA president Brian Hunt explained recently. As the CAA sees, the three major nuyths are: Number one: motorists are subsidized. In fact, drivers pay $14.3 billion in motoring fees, and get less than half back for road) construction and maintenance. Nuinber two: cars cause con- gestion. in fact, failure to invest inotoring fees in ade- quate roads has caused con- gestion. Number three: cars are Canada’s biggest polluters. In fact, cars create about 10% of No interest ’ No Payments < 4 ior 90 days Canada's warming gases. Hunt offered an enviren- mental improvement: “The best way to reduce the car's impact on the atmosphere is to mandate improved fucl economy. Our high motoring, taxes don’t work. Restricting movement won't work. The federal government must set targets, then get out of the way and let the auto makers use niarket forces to achieve those targets in the most eco- nomiical way possible.” He added, CAA also wants tighter and entorced fuel con- global sumption standards for trucks, buses and other vehi- cles. In carly December, CAA released a position on global warming, prepared by auto clubs around the world, The position included a wide vari- cty of measures to rednce car- bon diovide emissions from ears.
