Cats no Dear Editor: As an animal lover and responsible pet owner also liv- ing on Berkley Road, | feel £ am imminently qualified to respond to Brian Massullo’s letter (Callous Driver Kills Cat, Feb. 26 News). While you were wondering, how to tell your two-year-old son about the death of his favorite pet, did you also stop to consider how to tell him that the death was pre- ventable? Having, had multiple stray animals die in front of me or in my arms, the last one a cat only a few short weeks ago, I feel it is time to say enough needless deaths. Dear Editor: Re: Risks and Responsibility and Don’t Bind Sense Of Free Spint In Red Tape. When F read both Eric Waddell’s and Jeff Olsen's letters to. the editor in response to the News article “Another snowboarder dies” | knew | had to respond, but not in an angry defensive manner, as both had some very valid points that [ myself agree with. I decided to phone both men in order to talk to them about why I said what I said in the media regard- ing fines and repayment of rescue costs, We all came away with a berter understanding and mutual respect of each other. EF made these comments as result of my direct involvement in the rescue of young, Brittany McDowell. This rescue compelled me to break the silence and say something because this was a pre- ventable death. This wasn’t simply an accident. Ir was about a vibrant young woman who with her friends was caught in an avalanche on 4 40-degrce slope that had just hours before received well over 30 centimetres of fresh sow, Tt was an out-of-bounds hazardous area, not the “back- country.” Tt was a recipe for disaster. I felt somebody had to step forward and initiate something in order to start the process to address and hopefully prevent serious injuries or deaths in specific incidents such as this, as the numbers are escalating. I wanted someone in a leadership role in’ this Province to step in and take responsibilin tor this process so I and my teammates could concentrate on our primary responsibility which is to train and be ready to respond to search and rescue requests. The notion that taking risks like this is OK as long as you don’t put anvone at risk just doesn’t sit right for me, as there is more ro it than that. The reason I say this is when [got home ar pee in the morning after cleaning up the gear from the inci- dent, I stopped ta look in un my sleeping eight-year-old daughter in her bed and thought of nwo loving and grieving parents nor very far away who at this moment might be doing the same thing: but the bed they were looking at was empty, torever. To me the stark reality of death overrides this romanticism of freedom of the hills. I have seen it many times. It is not pleasant or popular to talk about this. E want to thank both Ente and Jeff as they both stood up to put a check on big brother but they both understood where I was coming from. I like Britanny’s father, do not want to make a cir- cus out of her death. 1 would appreciate those people who have a stake in freedom of the hills to step forward with possible solutions. It may save a life. Tim Jones Team Leader North Shore Rescue of North: Vancouver. match for speedy cars protection. How do T explain to mv two-year-old son why I am crying as “Muffy'’s” owner leaves heartbroken after iden- tifving her lifeless cat? I have beard all the excuses — cats are meant to roam, my cat doesn’t want to stay indoors. Would you let your two- year-old play outside unsuper- vised if he wanted to? As a parent, you must real- ize we sometimes have to say no to our children for their own protection, and it should be no different for animals.
