| crime and punishment ON Thursday, a policeman was shot in British Columbia. Constable Brian Lambie, a 14-year member, was responding to a sus- picious persons call _ from a pregnant woman. _ .- As he got out of his police car, he was shot in the chest -with a high-powered rifle... ‘Another police officer, cover- ’ “ing on the cali, put himself in ~ harm’s way to pull Lambie © into his vehicle and away from inamediate danger. “The saga began last Monday night in a botched holdup attempt of a video - _Store'in Cranbrook. A. “Bonnie. and Clyde” team from Calgary held up * Superior Video and ended up in a wild high-speed chase which ended in Marysville, near Kimberley. Numerous shots were fired during the chase. The two suspects ditched their stolen car and eluded the police search. On Wednesday, they approached the residence of Leanne Campbell, a woman eight days away from deliver- ing her first child. Campbelt refused to let them into her house after they'd asked to use her phone. Instead, Campbell, suspecting they were the suspects the police were looking for, called 9-1- !. While she was making the phone call, the suspects broke into the house and the piiwone went dead. Const. Lambie was dis- patched to investigate. He had barely got out of his car when he was hit. Fortunately, he was wearing a bullet-proof vest which absorbed most of the energy from the shot. The _ bullet.pierced his vest and entered his body. Equally for- tunate for Lambie, he had a partner willing to risk his life to save that of his brother Officer. - “Ina emt irony, Const. Lambie shouldn't have even been in this position. . He had already been trans- _ ferred to the Commercial _Crime Section in Vancouver, where his most serious health risk was a paper cut. Because of the depressed economy of that part of she Kootenays, he couldn't sell his house to tke his new position. He was, essentially, sitting in limbo waiting fora resolution to the problem when he got the call to the Campbell residence. Such is the lot ofa police officer, Every day the police aire required to approach houses, stand in front of doors, stop vehicles and per- form a myriad of duties with- out knowing what awaits on the other side. In May of 1992, it was just this dilemma which resulted in the death of Danny Possee, He was shot by members of the North Shore Drug Squad who blindly entered the house he was in with a search warrant. When the police entered, Possee was plinking away into the fireplace with a pellet rifle. In that split second, with a rifle in his hand, the police fired. Danny Possee was killed, The tragic shooting of Possee had its own cruel irony. Danny Possee was an innocent young man. He wanted to be a police officer. In 1989, while working as a. security officer for Paladin Security, he was twice cited for exceptional performance. The police were actually - ‘Jooking for Danny’s sister's and her boyfriend. Danny didn’t even live in the house being raided. The inquiry into the Possee shooting hasn't answered any of the lingering questions of the Possee family. Last week, the matter was back in the news in a story outlining the family concerns. ! can’t defend the police in this incident, nor do 1 con- Wednesday, June 5, 1996 ~ North Shore News ~ 14 between life and death demn their actions. Danny Possee was a vibrant, intelligent young man with a promising life in front of him. He was caught up in the wrong place ai the wrong time, innocently playing with a pellet rifle in the worst pos- sible coincidence. The Possee family need to see some closure on their per- sonal tragedy. But so do the police. The shooting of Const. Lambie underlines the dan- gers inherent in the lives of those who strive to protect us. A split second in time is, all too often, the difference beiween living and dying.
