in programs specifically
for their community, a
youth worker <old dis-
trict council on
Monday night.

Craig Johnston, who ran a

youth program in Deep Cove

and Dollarton for 12 years

before resigning from the

Seymour Community Services

Society last year, made a pro-

posal co council for a $55,000

needs of vouth in bis commu-
nity, he said. Many parents are
uneasy about their children
walking up. the hill to
Parkgate, particularly at night.

He also emphasized that
youth workers must be well-
respected and often present in
the community. Many of the
workers he has employed are
former participants in the
programs.

“You need workers that
are so much a part of the
community that you can show
up ar a fracas and people
know you,” he said. “Ve need
something a little less flashy
and more visible in Deep
Cove.”

In 1986, Johnston opened
the Myrtle Park drop-in cen-
tre. The program continued
to grow, adding open gym
nights, clubs, and offering ski-

ing, hiking and camping crips.
The success of the program,
Johnston said, lay in offering
asate place that youth liked to
go and their parents also felt
comfortable with.

The program Johnston is
proposing now is similar in
many ways, but would be
funded dircedly from the dis-
trict rather chan through the
Seymour Community Services
Society, which currently oper-
ates a youth program in Deep
Cove.

His = program would
employ one full-time and nwo
part-time youth workers, sup-
plemented by volunteers.

Johnston is proposing that
the $55,000 be diverted from
whar the district now gives
the sociccy for its youth pro-
gram.

Council requested the
planning department to look
at and report back on the pro-
posal, and to include it in next
year’s budget discussions.
