4 ~ Wednesday, February 7, 1996 — North Shore News news briefs _____ Post office goes for $3.8 million Off-duty arrest AN ALERT off-duty Vancouver City Police officer is being credited for helping catch a burglary suspect on Friday in the 1500-block of Kilmer Piace in Upper Lynn Valicy. The unnamed officer spotted a man loitering near a house. He then saw the suspicious man walk to the back of the house and disappear, according to a North Vancouver RCMP spokesman. When the RCMP arrived, they found a window open to the home. North Vancouver RCMP police dog Hawk was sent inside. Police say the dog quickly found the suspect behind a coat rack. Patrick Michael Mills, 35, of no fixed address, is charged with break and enter, theft under $5,000 and possession of stolen property under $5,000. On Dec. 19 Mills was arrested by North Vancouver RCMP Insp. Jamie Graham in connection with an alleged burglary in the 4600-block of Tourney Road in Lynn Valley. The second in command of the North Vancouver RCMP detachment detained Mills at a bus stop near Mountain Highway and 24th Street after the man appeared to match a suspect’s description. Mills was charged with break and enter in connection with the Dec. 19 incident. A bench warrant was issued for his arrest after he failed to show up for court on Jan. 3. 9-1-1 hops CALLS TO the 9-1-1 emergency telephone system will exceed one million in 1996, if the current call volume con- tinues.
