Helmets must be standardized

ACROSS:CANADA each year,
many people, especially children,
are seriously injured in cycling
accidents, often resulting in death.
The. severity of these injuries and
‘the numbex of fatalities can be dra-
matically reduced by the wearing of
‘CSA-certified cycling helmets,
according to. the Canadian Stan-
dards Association. —

By current estimates, fewer than
20% of cyclists wear helmets, and
the Canadian: Medical Association

reports that 80% of bicycle-related
deaths are the result of head
injuries. This occurs despite the fact
that Canada has an excellent
National Standard (CAN/CSA-
D113.2-M89 Cycling Helmets) for
the testing and certification of
cycling helmets.

are designed solely for use by
cyclists who are five years of age
