DIVING... Paige Gordon, of West Vancouver, confirmed her status as one of the world’s best divers last Saturday in Beijing, China as she claimed fourth spot in the women’s three-metre event at the 20-country FINA World Cup diving competition. “This was the best perfor- mance and the most impor- tant result of my career,” said Gordon, 20, who has won five medals at various international meets so far this year. ‘‘For the past couple of years | knew | was capable of top-six performaices at big competitions, but I really needed to learn to focus men- tally. Now I know that when 1 set a goal 1 can achieve it.”’ Gordon, a four-year national team veteran, placed fourth in the preliminary round to earn a bye to the semi-final. She was second in her group of four in the semis to ad- vance to the final-four round, Next to the Olympics, the FINA World Cup is the biggest event on the diving calendar. Gordon’s fourth place automatically earned her an A card from Sport Canada. GYMNASTICS... Local gymnasts dominated the North Shore/Vancouver A&B Gymnastic Championships, held last Sunday at the Flicka Gymnastics Club in North Vancouver. Host club Flicka gymnasts Breanne King (midget), Cynthia Tjoei (Argo) and Lucienne Lebrun (Tyro) were the top. perfor- mers in their respective divi- sional A categories. The North Shore club West Coast Dynamos also placed three gymnasts on the gold medal podium. The divisonal B winners from the Dynamos were Katie Halloran (Argo), Lisa Dunn (Tyro) and Stephanie Tassin (Open). LACROSSE... The North Shove Indians continued their unbeaten regular season with a home-game victory over third-place Ladner Pioneers, 12-8, in West Coast Senior B lacrosse action last Friday night. The Indians are 6-0 on the year, two points back of the league-leading (7-0) Bur- naby Lakers. Indian forward ‘Todd = Katanchik, with the Vancouver Burrards last season, leads all North Shore players in the individual scor- ing race with 20 points in 6 games, eighth in the league scoring race. N. Shore players to mee ‘Two pee wee standouts on Canada West TWO LOCAL 13-year-old boys will be representing Canada this summer at the Czech World Tournament in Praha, Czechoslovakia. By A.P. MicCredie Sports Reporter Brent Maurer, a member of the North Shore Winter Club pee wee AAA team, and Rigel Shaw, from the West Vancouver pee wee AAA team, have both been selected to the Canada West pee wee AAA all-star team. The Canada West all-siars will travel to Frankfurt, Germany and travel to Marianski Lazne where they vill spend five days par- ticipating in a twice-daily Elite Development program. The world-class training program in- cludes skill testing, ability devel- opment and team practices. The team will then travel to Praha for a seven-day tournament where they will go up against the best 13-year-olds from Russia, Sweden, Eastern Canada, - Head over heels GOING HEAD over heels is nothing new for these three North Shore gymnasts, who recently competed at the National Trampoline and Power Tumbling Championships in Toronto. In his last Atom Rep year, Shaw received the Vancouver Atom Super Series best defenceman award, a Super Series game MVP, and was chosen to the Super Series all-star team. Maurer’s most recent acknowl- edgements include the Coquitlam Pup Most Outstanding Defenceman, All-Around Tour- nament Pup MVP plaque and Atom Super Series game MVP. Both players have continued to play well at the pee wee level, playing equally well at. beth defence and forward assignments. When interviewed, Maurer and Shaw said they were very excited to be playing hockey in Czechoslovakia and hope the team does well for Canada and the North Shore.
