“SUE” SEWELL Prescott Moody arrived from Maine and established S.P. Mcody - & Co., the fourth mill ven- ture on Burrard Inlet’s north shore, which later became known as Moody, Nelson & Co. Moody was one of the province’s | first - conscientious’ businessmen’ and the mill’ town, Moodyville, was . named after him. This small community boasted a school, library, and electric lights, Juxuries as yet unknown to Victoria, New Westminster or any settlement.north of San Francisco. The site for the sawmill was on deep: water with plenty of fresh water from Lynn Creek easily ac- cessible by a fiume. Established in 1862, it was the first industry on the inlet. According to John Busnes in his book “North Vancouver 189]- 1907, ‘‘The vessels were chiefly sailing ships although at times lramp steamers were loaded there, chiefly to take lumber to the United Kingdom. . . “The sawmill itself tay parallel to the shoreline, thus providing on the south side a place for steamers to tie up. But at the east end the sailing ships tied up.’’ This is what is pictured in the illustration above, sketched from a photograph taken at the time. ‘Sailing ships came to Moodyville from all parts of the world to load lumber. There were many vessels from Peru and Chile, also other South American countries as well as some from Great Britain. When they left the wharf: with a full load of lumber, a caiinon would be fired to salute eek NORTH SHOR HERITAGE by Dorothy Foster Burnes writes that when the ships arrived, the crew would usually desert because of the number of weeks it took to load the lumber. The ship then lay at anchor in the harbor waiting for a new crew. “‘... if she needed a new crew, it would be provided for the sailing master mostly by crimps who would shanghai the men in some saloon in Vancouver. The new crew would be brought out during the night and then the captain would again board his vessel. Many times he would also be ‘three sheets to the wind’ when he came aboard his vessel.”’ The milltown of Moodyville no longer exists, and Sue Moody died before .he saw its full develop- ment. He drowned in 1875 when the steamer Pacific went down off Cape Flattery on its way to San Francisco. . Shortly after, a piece of wreckage (a board), washed up on Beacon Hill Park shore in Vic- toria..On it was ‘‘S.P. Moody all lost’? pencilled in on the paint’s surface. His last message on this piece of wood is on display at the. Pres- along Moodyville exhibition at entation House Museum, with other artifacts. There is also a heritage walking tour of the Moodyville site, May 2 at 2 p.m., with the museum cu- rator John Stuart and historian Roy Pallant. This is the second walling tour on Moodyville. I joined in on the first one and spent an enjoyable and educa- tional afternoon. A walking com- panion turned out to be . Sewell Moody’s . granddaughter, who resides in West Vancouver.
