A Review: The Streets Are Paved With Gold, A Tribute to a Ca-
nadian Immigrant Neighbourhood by Carole Itter in collaboration with
Al Neil and Luke Blackstone. At the Vancouver Art Gallery, March 29-
May 20. Mon., Wed., Fri., Sat.: 10-5; Thurs, 10-9; Sun, 12-5.

BELIEF in the mythological city of Eldorado, where
the streets were reputed to be paved with gold, was
one of the driving forces behind the ambiguous 17th

century European adventures to the New World, America.

Oid beliefs die hard. The same
superstition impelled, and ap-
parently still impels, many im-
migrants in the 20th century to
head for the Eldorado of the
North, dear old Canada, where
the streets are paved only with
tarmac and where the garbage
cans of their residents are
overflowing with waste.

Carole Itter’s The Streets Are
Paved With Gold pays tribute to
the people for whom this myth
was a dream they were determin-
ed to follow, even though it did
not lead to a pot of gold at the end
of the rainbow.

in particular, she pays homage
to the immigrants who settled in
Vancouver's East Side community
of Strathcona by creating what cu-
ator Joan Richardson calls ‘‘a
metaphorical street formed by
thousands of gilded found ob-
jects.”

picture frames, table legs, chairs,
foundry molds, tennis rackets,
garden rakes, paint brushes, prun-
ing shears, and rolling pins.

Assembling what she unassum-
ingly calls a “loose spill’ on the
floor of the gailery, the artist takes
the discarded commodities that
were once so dear to their owners,
tarts them up in garish gold paint,
and painstakingly organizes them
to mimic the imploding collapse of
a whole household and its con-
tents.

flywheel.

Thanks to the technical inven-
tiveness of Luke Blackstone, one
of Itter’s collaborators, the
flywheel is designed to rotate
when powered by a motor liber-
ated fram a used washing machine
and tailored to set off a burlesque
version of ““O Canada," im-
provised by the noted North Van-
couver jazz musician, Al Neil,
against the rattle-and-band
backdrop of city street noises.

The result is a wonderfully
playful, multi-media, four dimen-
sional potpourri of cast-offs in
which a melange of personal and
collective histories are recycled.
