THE LOWER Lonsdale Seniors
Association (LISA) is holding its
fifth annual general meeting and
election of its board of directors
for [99!. The event takes place on
March 25 at 1:30 p.m. at Yic’s
Dining & Lounge, 127 E. 3rd
Street, North Vancouver. An early
supper will be served after the
meeting and will cost $3.25 per
Person.

Mr. Mac Chappel, the new ex-
ecutive director of the Kiwanis
Seniors Housing Society, Inc. will
be the principal guest speaker at
the meeting.

LLSA provides seniors with an
Opportunity to discuss their con-
cerns and ideas regarding com-
munity issues that affect their dai-
ly living. During its first two years
of operation, 200 seniors have
become members.

Among its achievements are:
restoration of a bus stop at 4th
Street and St. George’s Avenue;
two stop signs put in at the in-
tersection of St. George’s Avenue
and 4th Street; and the reduction
of noise pollution in the lower
Lonsdale area.

The LLSA has offered educa-
tion and information workshops
on: how to form an association;
how to get funding from private
and government sources; health
and safety tips for emergencies;
and landlord and tenant rights.

LLSA members enjoy social
teas and other recreational activi-
ties more than anything else. The
association brings happiness to
shut-ins and home-bound seniors
by offering social teas and enter-
tainment. Members enjoy out-trips
to places of interest and special
monthly events at general
membership mectings.

There is now a committee to al-
tend to sick and lonely members
by making phone calls and sen-
ding cards. The association do-
nated $250 to Lions Gate Hospital
for the purchase of a = scanner
machine called the Gamma Cam-
era and gave gift hampers to de-
serving members during Christmas
time.

But the association operates
with limited funding. The main
source of finance comes from
membership fees and special
fundraising activities. Staff work-
ing for the association donate
their services and time.

The LUSA is fortunate to have
the free use of the Kiwanis Seniors
Housing Apartment facilities. The
LLSA is grateful to the Kiwanis
Seniors’ Housing Society Board of
Directors for this privilege.
