24 — Sunday, October 28, 1990 - North Shore News SPIRITUALLY SPEAKING New deacon leaves for Saskatchewan This week Spirituaily Speaking concludes a two-part feature pro- filing women in the ministry. AT A time in life when some people are winding down a lengthy career, 62-year-old Doreen Becker is just embark- ing on the adventure of her lifetime. The Rev. Doreen Becker, a newly ordained Anglican deacon, has just left her three-year posi- tion as pastoral assistant at St. John the Evangelist Church in North Vancouver to become the minister responsible for a three- church parish in Leask, Saskat- chewan. Although the appointment will mean leaving friends and family members in Vancouver — ‘“‘S'll miss them like the very Dickens," — and taking on the job of con- ducting three services every Sun- day morning at churches each separated by an hour's drive, Becker says it never occurred to her to turn down the offer. “The word ‘no’ never came into my mind,’’ she says. ‘‘I’ll go and do the best I can.... I’m not afraid of the cold, but I do hope ! don’t get lost too often. “Everything I’ve done up to now has led up to this,'’ noted Becker. ‘‘It’s very hard work, but it’s the only work that captivates me. | would not be passionate about anything else.” Becker wasn’t always a chur- ch-goer, let alone a _ minister. While she was heavily involved in her church when her children were growing up, she gradually withdrew and studied different approaches to spirituality, through By Peggy Trendell-Whittaker News Reporter reading and meeting a variety of people. “Out of all that { came back to the church, because it had another dimension to offer that other (avenues) did nov."* She returned, ‘‘with new ears and cyes,”’ at a time when the church was undergoing its own changes. “*It was using the vocabulary and idiom of our present day," recalls Becker. ‘‘That was very exciting.” As she once again became in- volved in the church, Becker gradually became aware that she felt driven to serve the church as more than a layperson. She made the decision to take a degree at the Vancouver School of Theolo- ‘“‘My ignorance was abysmal, but it was very exciting.’” Becker remembers. ‘‘At least [ learned the questions. Before, I didn't even know the questions.’ Her class was composed of a wide variety of students. **Women of my age were not an oddity,’’ she says. ‘‘There were very few people who had cv..ie straight out of an undergraduate [a a a a a a ee ee ee Wage =O E WEDNESDAY THURSDAY BOOR PRIZE Fabulous Food Fair * Hand-made Crafts eh. ~ sheen SIs 39th ANNUAL HADASSAH BAZAAR EVERYTHING XPOSITION Forum & Food Building, PNE ] I | | J NOVEMBER 7 11am - 10pm ! We were all sorts and ages, and we were valued for what we were.”" As part of her training for the ministry, Becker did work at Riverview Hospital, a 10-month internship at the North Shore Counseiling Centre, and a *‘prac- ticum"' at St. John’s Chureb. Having earned her degree, how- ever, she was nor able to be or- dained in the Diocese of New Westminster because there was no position available. “They don't want ordained people floating around without work ,"" she said. Recently being offered the parish in Saskatchewan meant that Becker could be ordained three Due to Public Demand years after finishing her schooling. She was ordained as a deacon on Thursday, Oct. 18 at St. John the Evangelist: church, at a commu- nion service that was followed by a reception and a gift presentation from the congregation. Today is Becker's first Sunday in her new churches in Saskat- chewan. CAPILANO BRANCH OF NORTH VANCOUVER DISTRICT LIBRARY vill be OPEN on FRIDAYS unt 9 p.m., starting Nov. 2nd.
