Flammable liquids
could bomb basement

WOULD YOU keep a bomb ir
your basement, garage or car? In-
side your home? The District of
North Vancouver Fire Department
is sure you wouldn’t, but you
might be doing something just as
dangerous without realizing it.

Flammable liquids, like gasoline,
are. serious hazards we keep
routinely around our homes. A
single gallon of gasoline packs the
same wallop as 19 sticks of dyna-
mite, yet we often don’t use
enough care when using these ma-
terials.

Don’t store or use gasoline or
other flammables in an enclosed
area or where there are pilot lights
or spark sources to ignite them.
Keep them stored in containers
approved by Underwriters’
Laboratories of Canada (ULC) or
Canadian Standards Association
(CSA).

Use a tight fitting lid at all times
and keep the materials where they
can’t be reached or even seen by
children. Never bring gasoline into
your home. Gasoline isn’t for
cleaning. Never refuel any engine
while you are smoking or while the
engine is running or still hot from
running.

mouth; use a hand-operated pump
designed for the purpose.

And remember, vapors from
flammable liquids will drift far
from their source without your
realizing it, so extend your caution
area to a large area around the
location of the actual liquid. The

vapors are just as explosive as the
liquid itself, but far more danger-
ous because you can’t see them.

If gasoline spills on your
clothing, wash the garments im-
mediately. Flammable vapors can
hang in clothing and ignite or ex-
plode much later. Letting the
clothing dry is not enough.

Don’t smoke while using glue,
nail polish or hair spray. Extra
care is important when you're
dealing with a bomb.
