< The Orpheum Kids’ Club Presents ; THE ROCK’N’ROLL CHRISTMAS SHOW Vaidy * KidCo *« The Runaway Jukebox AT THE ORPHEUM Saturday December 9 2:30 pm General Admission: $3 per person Aging dog needs change protein and four to six per cent fibre. Animals which will benefit from a diet with these charac- teristics are those with frequent constipation and increased weight gain due to a decline in activity. A diet with the above charac- teristics may not be appropriate for an older pet who is still very active. Likewise, special conditions which are present in your pet may require a special diet. The CVMA recently introduced standards for diets intended for older animals. The diet should contain no less than 18 per cent protein of high quality and five per cent fat. The energy level of the diet should maintain the normal weight of the animal. Products which meet these standards have the CVMA certification seal on them. Don't put your pet on a senior food or a lite diet just because he/she is at a certain age. Rather, feed your pet according to its indi- vidual state and rate of activity. This can best be obtained by first consulting your veterinarian and reviewing your pet’s individual health and nutrient requirements. iy BY “7 iH NY Phone:, 280-4444 sy EB: ay 3 a ¥ Anniversary Ring 14K Gold with row of diamonds From $299 | ¥ . ro ae pean _ « 4 / rs Wf a ; = Se oh y — at 4 2 ay Cry : Aah : L kes a oes J bod, * . f 7 4 rr Dias = % = aA — ————s : " yA 2", . > "at oo 7 a no, hy L . / : _—— 24 4 22 - Wednesday, December 6, 1989 - North Shore News THE MOST frequent change in the aging pet is the slowing of the metabolic rate which lowers the animal’s energy requirement. If the - animal requires fess energy but continues to eat at the same rate of energy intake, the surplus energy ts stored as fat and the pet becomes overweight. This may impose an extra strain on the heart or on aged bones and joints. In this case, it would be helpful to feed the animal either less food or a food which contains a reduced amount of energy per unit of weight. Likewise, the need for dietary protein may decline because of a change in activity, a slow-down of metabolic activity and a diminish- ed ability on the part of the kidneys to deal with the waste products of protein digestion. Such an animal would benefit from decreasing the total protein intake. The gastrointestinal tract loses tone with increasing age so the stimulative effects of added fibre may also be useful. Because these changes are most common, diets formulated with the older pet in mind frequently con- tain fewer calories, 18 per cent me Tickets: VTC/TicketMaster.
