Dear Editor:

According to the reasoning of
Walter Block (Let business decide
on smoking bans, August 27),
government should butt out of
health legislation affecting the
workplace. He thinks the free
marketplace should sort out who
breathes what air, and at what
cost.

By this reasoning, there would
be no laws governing any hazard-
ous chemical exposure in any
workplace. Substances causing
cancer and acute illness could be
splashed about the premises and/
or its employees. Employees un-
able or unwilling to leave their jobs
would live with impaired health.

Block’s and the Fraser In-
stitute’s philosophy is simplistic to
the point of absurdity. Health pro-
tective measures have been in-
troduced into public and occupa-
tional settings exactly because the
free enterprise system does litte or
nothing to protect us all from
serious health risks.

“Do away with all laws’’ is not
“free’’—it is anarchistic. Absolute
rule of the dollar is as destructive
to freedom as any other antisocial
anarchy.

The non-smoking and the smok-
ing public alike deserve the protec-
tion of clean air bylaws for shared
public airspace. It is their free,
democratic right to breathe.
