By MAUREEN CURTIS Contributing Writer Oct. 31 is the deadline for lodg- ing an appeal on the assessments, which came in at an average in- crease of 37 per cent. West Vancouver director of fi- nance George Horwood said the 1989 Assessment Roll, which is based on market values, was “reasonably accurate cverall,’’ and he doesn’t recommend a general appeal of the roll. But individuals experiencing unusually large increases may wish to appeal their cases, as an above-average increase will have a significant effect on the tax rates GOLD WANTED We buy karat gold; old rings, chains, charms, etc. plus dental gold. THE GOLDPOST 1207 W. 16th St., NV. (at Pemberton behind McDonaids) Open Mon. - Sat. 14am - 3 pm Closed Wed. & Sun. 987-8731 when they are announced next June, Horwood said. “But by then, the baby is born, and they should have done some- thing about it nine months be- fore,’’ he said. Horwood, who went through the assessment roll, found about 3,200 properties with a 10 per cent above-the-average assessment in- crease. About 1,000 of these have expe- rienced a more than 20 per cent above-the-average increase, while a few are as high as 65 per cent above average. “Surprisingly, we have not seen that many appeals,"’ said Hor- wood. ‘“‘The time frame is running “h out.”” The property assessment and the mill rate set by the municipality and school district are the two variables that together produce the constant, which is the tax revenue needed to run West Vancouver District and the school system. If the assessments are high, the tax mill rate can actually go down, such that the homeowner ex- periencing an average assessment increase will only see taxes rise by the amount of the annual budget increase. “*But if your assessment is 65 per cent above the average, your taxes are going to increase substantial- ly,’ warned Mayor Don Lanskail. ioss?
