$ - Wednesday, October 12, 1988 - North Shore News Noise by law is a problem Dear Editor: My sympathy went out to the Kallweit family of Caulfeild in respect to excessive noise distur- bance (West Vancouver Residents Fed Up with Noise). However, it does cease at night and they are able to sleep. We are not. Here on Esquimalt Avenue and 1Sth Street in West Vancouver there is no respite day or night. There are buses to the right of us, there are buses to the left of us, there are buses in front of us and thank the Lord there is no access across the back of us. There is excessive traffic noise from dump trucks, transport trucks with screeching brakes, li- quor trucks, city trucks, trucks of every type, horns, motorcycles, Phones don’t belong in cars Dear Editor: Gradually nudging out customized licence plates as winner of the cornball category, one must not rule out the latest car tele- phone craze asa Serious contender. The very thought of doing anything but operating a vehicle to the very best of one’s driving abili- ty is not asking too much in the light of news reports of harrowing accidents, recent ICBC statistics and macabre coroners’ reports. _We dutifully try and obey the warnings from alf quarters — buckle-up, hands on the wheel, check your mirrors, look straight shead. I see nothing in the driver’s manual that considers it proper to take up a slouch position, have one hand to the ear, looking to see if the driver next to you is looking and at the same time negotiate a corner with the other hand. I sometimes wonder if these car “phone-ies’” aren’t maybe faking it. Sixty thousand of them are in California with a hot selling item known as a toy car telephone. An office was someplace you phoned from and conducted good business from. An automobile got you temporarily away from that atmosphere, a sort of cocoon that enabled you to quietly prepare for your next meeting so that you might have the edge and, of course, if a phone is needed there's booths aplenty. What happened? Somewhere be- tween Maw Bell and Lilly Tomlin we've come unglued and are en- dangering others. Ted Hadley West Vancouver FRATERNAL ORDER OF EAGLES Many thanks to all those who = gave genercusly at their Charity Auction on Sun. 25 September — - too numerous to men- tion by name. Tom Pennington (President) sirens of ambulances and fire trucks which are stationed across the street from this building, to say nothing about police sirens tearing up and down 15th Street day and night. Unfortunately my balcony hangs directly over 15th Street. The cons- tant noise has damaged my hear- ing. Two people I know personally — there may be more —- have been awakened from a deep sleep to find themselves on the floor, pro- pelled out of bed by the shock of a sudden loud noise. Both ladies were hurt. One injured a knee; the other, a double amputee with no feet to land on, suffered a double injury. The noise bylaw isn’t worth the paper it is written on, It allows full reign to the noise problem.
