The chicken livers were too dry and their marinade too bland to make the dish interesting. Also sampled were Homus and Pita ($2.95) and Saganaki ($5.75), Greek feta cheese pan-fried with lemon and brandy. Saganaki is for the ardent calorie seeker: cheese fried in oil. In the main round, my wife tried a Kalamari Dinner ($8.95) while 1 tried the Great’s Arni Lamb Roumeli ($9.95) The Kalamari was excellent. Squid was sliced into good-sized edible bits and deep-fried in a light, grease-free batter — a classic Greek dish presented in all its glorious simplicity at The Great Greek, My. meal included approximately six slabs of lamb, three roasted potatoes the size of small Greek war canoes and 2 side of carrots. The portion was a_ holdover from robuster times and designed more for broad-sworded sackers of cities than round-shouldered reviewers of restaurants. - For dessert we sampled The Great Greek’s special Baclava and’ Kataifi. The two dishes are both sweet - phyllo pastry stuffed with a mash of walnuts and honey. Marinakis, who took over the restaurant Nov. 15, 1967, said Tuesday he is inviting all North Shore residents and patrons to the open house, ‘‘to show my ap- preciation for their support over the years.”’ Refreshments and hors d’oeuvres will be served along with a 12-foot cake. The Canyon Gardens’ 200-seat restaurant is the nucleus of a multi-roomed operation that has hosted 6,722 weddings since Marinakis took over the Canyon Gardens in 1967. According to Marinakis, the secret to the restaurant’s continu- ing popularity, apart from its ownership, which has stayed cons- tant for 20 years, is its food, ser- vice and constant pursuit of con- temporary cuisine and surroun- dings.
