SELECT SUITABLE TREES

TREES PLAY an important role
in the fandscape around a home,
Offering beauty, shade, privacy
and other benefits.

However, the wrong tree in the
wrong place can have a negative
effect — so it is important to take
time and care in selecting suitable
species for your property.

When choosing a tree, consider
two important, but often ne-
glected, factors: how tall and how
wide will it grow? These factors
should influence which type you
buy and where you pl.nt it.

B.C. Hydro recommends that if
the tree is to be located either near
or under a powerline or close to
the house, you should select only
small species or shrubs. Single
tall-growing trees may become a
hazard as they reach maturity.

Trees should not be planted too
close to powerlines because bran-
ches‘ can come into contact with
wires, causing power interruptions,
either due to normal growth or
during storms. This may inconve-
nience you and your neighbors,
and sesult in added expenses to
B.¢.- Hydro, which must send a
crew to repair the damage and
restore power.

If you have a tree growing close
to or in contact with overhead
powerlines, do not attempt to
prune or fell it yourself. If you

touch a branch which is in contsct
-- with a powerline, it could be faral.

advice.

Avoid planting trees so close to
the house that they damage siding
and roofing and clog or break rain

- gutters. Because roots may extend

beyond the spread of the branches
and damage sidewalks, driveways
or underground service systems,
trees should not be placed too near
property lines, where utility and
roadside construction and im-
provements are most likely to take
place.

When planting under or near a
powerline, choose species that will
not grow into the lines and that
will survive in your region.

Shrubs and dwarf trees may be
planted directly under powerlines.
However, where medium to large
trees are desired, be sure to plant
away from the lines — and be
careful to check width as well as
height. Taller species, such as co-
nifers, may sway or fall onto the
