We have to learn to cope KENT KEILBACK Students Against Drunk Driving ‘The age should not be raised — the problem is not being dealt with pro- perly. It’s not the age that matters, it’s the way people are brought up. ‘‘In Europe, they have a problem with alcoholism, not drinking and driving. It's a privilege to drink there, not a kick lke it is here for kids. We just have drivers as a whole abusing alcohol. ‘*Drinking habits are already there and they're due to society’s guidance. There should be more discussion. Teenagers to- day think it's like the hippy era — gO against the establishment) or what’s been set down. People want to abuse the privilege of drinking. “‘Ie’s mot just a question of educating the young, it anne canacen ee aRRIAAETRED ARI Ae 7 also means adults. Or people who have (drink- ing) problems could counsel On a one-to-one basis or in small groups. “If a person was known as a rapist, they wouldn’t survive in their surroun- ding community, but if they’re known as a drink- ing driver, people just say, ‘Oh, that’s a pity.’ “*As far as advertising (of alcohol) goes, they're trying to sell a product, and they seem to be doing pretty good jobs. But the messages that follow those advertisements should be more. graphic. **Alcohol is socially ac- ceptable in society, like nu- clear arms. But on the other hand, kids can always find ways to get l1- quor. Kids now are getting fake picture 1.D. If you have kids between I6 and 18 going to pubs, half the time they don’t have |.D. With an age change, you'll sull have 18 year olds try- ing to get into pubs, but you probably won’t see the younger ones there. ‘*) don’t think the age change should be extended to voting or driving. As far as voling goes, 19 is a good age. Voting 1s a privilege and it can’t really be abus- ed. But alcohol can be abused. ‘As far as driving is , paintings, photes, and eouvor drtists. concerned, | think it might be a good idea to change the age to 18, or when kids graduate from high school. If it was changed to 21, they would be out of the work force, especially in jobs lke bus driving. ‘Tl feel the legal age for drinking should be changed as soon as possible. But the only way | can think of (to implement the change) is to have people write to their MLAs and try to make people more aware. “LT also think (alcohol) education should be man- datory in schools. Young teens are not aware of the consequences of alcohol. They’re really more wor- ried about getting caught than they are about hurting others or getting hurt themselves.’’ SHOW INFORMATION Maurice Boudard, Chery! Lobe and June Low, Paintings and Prints.
