GETTING a book published is
cause for celebration. Getting an
anthology of local writers published
for the paltry sum of $3,500 is,
quite simply, astounding.

But thar is what the North Shore Writezs*
Association (NSWA) has achieved with its
publication of Shore Lines.

Conceived as a millennium project and
achieved with the support of the North
Shore Arts Commission and the financial
backing of the City and District of North
Vancouver, Shore Lines is a publication of the
North Shore Writers Association and pre-
sents the work of 21 North Shore writers.

Besides a residency requirement, the
North Shore had to figure i in each of the

submissions.

The book includes fiction, non-fiction
and poetry while the writers, chosen by a
selection committee, include new voices,
published and prize-winning authors. None
of the contributors were paid for their work.

Loranne Brown, president of the
Federation of B.C. Writers and author of The
Handless Maiden was the editor of Shore
Lewes.

She writes in her introduction to the
anthology: “...there is an astonishing range
of voice and point of view, Mood and vista
are as various and changeable as the weather
itself. In poetry, fiction, memoir, history and
art alike, there are common threads, vet
uncommon vision. I'm certain these imagi-
native nes, cast from rugged shores, will
hook readers near and far.”
