A West Vancouver home listed as a
building of primary importance in West
Vancouver's Heritage Inventory has
been designated a National Historic
Site.

Andy Mitchel, Secretary of State (Parks),
announced on July 18, Parks Day, that the B.C.
Binning House was among a series of designations
of national historic significance.

The designations are made on the recommen-
dation of the Fiiscoric Sites and Monuments Board
of Canada, which noted the 1942 residence of
Bertram and Jessie Binning demonstrated a unique
approach to modern living during the Second

Vorld War.

Binning, a noted Canadian artist and educator,
designed the house himself, with the help of archi-
tects CE. Pratt and R.A.D. Berwick. It was meant
to serve as a model for economical and effi
houses and housing, and for the expression of new
ideas about the interrelationship of art, architec-
ture and landscape.

I: was featured in exhibitions and publications
of the “40s and °50s and influenced postwar resi-
dential design, particularly on the West Coast.

The low-lying building, made up of two mass-
es on different levels and surrounded by patios,
features a hillside garden vith a spectacular view
and takes advantage of the West Coast’s temperate
climate.

According to Parks Canada notes on the resi-
dence, the design “exemplifies a Modern approach
to form and function through the use of local
materials, in particular wood and stone, and new
technologies, such as flat roofs, clerestory win-
dows, glazed doors, cantilevered canopies and
built-in furnishings.”

One of the talenzed artist’s exterior murals
marks the entrance to the home and its interior
spaces and ever-changing light conditions were the
pertect setting for his work.

The Binning residence and another site in
Montreal were the only nwo sites named for the
