Rock cat talks about Nine Lives

Aerosmith, on tour since
May to support the new disc
Nine Lives, rocks really hard at the Pacific
Coliseum, 7:30 p.m., Oct. 25.

Aerosmith guitarist Brad Whitford
talked last week:
What do you do when you're not tour-

B Whitford: “Well, for instance, I'm call-
ing you from Texas Motor Speedway,
where J just climbed out of a race car. Pll
get into any kind of a race car that some-
one will let me drive. [ also fike to spend

¢ with my family in Massachusetts.”
It's rare for a band to stay relevant and
together for the length that you guys
ve.

Whitford: “It’s a very special chem-
istry. It’s a family really. We’ve been
together with this group Jonger than
when we lived with our familics at home.
After a while it just feels like that’s where
yorr're supposed to be.”

The cartoon art for the disc is pretty
wild stuff. Where did that crazy cat
come from?

Whitford: “It just kind of evolved. We
had millions of ideas. Part of it came from
the title, which is a song we had whiten
earlicr. We'd done a photo shoot with
some cats, a photo shoot with a biack
leopard, another one with these hairless
cats. It} just kind of evoived.”

Whitford: “That was my
dad, He passed away three
years ago. He always enjoyed
the music. Before Phad my
licence and when I had
bands he'd always volunteer
te drive us. He was very
proud.”

Aerosmith has influenced a
lot of groups. Anybody influence your
approach to guitar?

Whitford: “Well God, that still hap-
pens. 1 can leam from ‘anybody. 1 find
that’s what I do. I sce people play and 1
constantly pick up firue threads of things
of people’s techniques that you can always
apply to your playing.

“My major influences are the carly days
of the British Invasion. — Stones, Clap: am,
Page, Beck. Those are my reference points
for what guitar is supposed to sound like.”
What arc you listening to these days
that you like out there?

Whitford: “I like a lot of the current

stuff because there are lots of guitars and
kind of a return-to-roots sounds, like the
Foo Fighters. People tink this is real new,
but to me the Foo Fighters, that’s what
Cream was doing. You know, hittin’ the
drums real hard, crankin’ the guitars, and
making these nice melodies. There’s noth-
ing new about that. It’s about making an
interesting song, that's what counts.”
I checked out the Net to see what was
out there for Acrosmith and one of the
things I found was < Website with pic-
tures of people’s Aerosmith tattoos.

Whitford: “It’s amazing. We sce so
much of this stuff, you know we've got to
start documenting it. ‘The tattoos that we

see are unbelievable. [1's everywhere you
go.”

What’s one of the more interesting ones
yourve scen?

Whitford: “Well of course the girls put
it anywhere, so I've scen them in some
attractive places. Some of them are huge.
There was this guy whose whole back was
Acrosmith wings. That's a coinmitment.”
You guys crank out a lot of songs that

never make it to the studio releases.
What are you going to do with ali of
that material?

Whitford: “I: will come out at some
point, We have quite a bit of stuff now
that’s pretty much finished.”
