20 — Sunday, April 27, 1997 — North Shore News FORGIVE me for prodding, but are you organized for our journey to the North next month? Got your reserva- tion? Got your cam- era film? Got your expectations? [ am. 1 have. Well, maybe I have a little advantage too. My husband and I have done this trip before, thanks to the West Coast Railway chaps, and we know we don’t have to pack any- thing fancy and we also know we shouldn’t expect particularly warm weather. Spring in the North is an exhilarating exercise but it can still get chilly after sundown, You want to Jook like a seasoned traveller but you also want to be comfortable. I have to tell you I don’t want to go back to live in the North now that I’m old. It isn’t as hard a life as it was in my day, I know that, but still, the rigors of the cli- mate give me rheumatism just thinking about them. But I also carry in my mind memories of the seemingly infinite space. And I long to again sec the incredible night skies, throbbing with a million stars and rustling with the shitting of the northern lights. Really, you can hear them, like the sound of ladies in taffeta dresses, dancing. My choice, from the three options the system offers, is the one that will give us time in Barkerville. To have that pleasure, ic is my under- standing that one should go north by train to Fort Nelson, but come back vie the bus, which includes a detour into the old mining town. It’s pretty hoked up, I know, but ir still has some of the real flavor of the original. The whole journey takes nine interesting days, all of them focusing A SENIORS on your comfort and pleasure, and if we’re lucky we will be there in the far north during their springtime. T feel a bit uncasy about thar, in view of the recent conclusion by the weather people that we got spring seven or eight days earlier this year — it could be true up north as well, and we might be too late for the heady hts and a chill burst of excitement that grabs that country at break-up time. The thing I very much want NOT to do is to visit Prince George, my home town. I know, I should be all agog at sce- ing its new dimensions, thrilled by its 50,000 or whatever population. Nor me. Now if they could promise that I could buy an ice cream at Candy Allen’s store on Third Avenue and maybe pick my way across the slough at the bottom of Connaught Hill, which was part of our short cut to the elementary school. Or if I could visit the Keefer building on George Street to watch a basketball game, OK, 'd jump at the chance. I don’t have a place in this current version. ll stick with my memories instead.
