A whole new generation is discovering the appeal of the original Brat Pack —- Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra and Sammy Davis Jr. Lounging is back; martinis are hip. In December, Dewie Pardie & Howe shed its pub image and reopened as Alibi’s, a sleck after-dinner club. There's even a Lower Lonsdale burger bar, Legends on 2nd, that features live jazz Friday and Saturday nights. Across the water, Gastown’s Purple Onion and The Chameleon at Hotel Georgia are playing to packed houses. “The whole lounge, Frank Sinatra, martini thing is huge,” says Purple Onion’s John Pineau, whose club and lounge features live acts every night of the week. Yet there’s a joke musicians are fond of telling: “What's the difference between the Chameleon and the Purple Onion?” Answer: “At the Purple Onion if they don’t -= on Present this ad to Wednesday, January 15, 1997 — North Shore News - 15 want ro listen to you they blow cigar smoke in your face.” And at the Chameleon? “They sit at the bar.” Jazz trumpeter eff Mahoney says it illustrates the Canadian club mentality towards the jazz experience. In the U.S., audiences are more physically interactive. “There are shouts of encour- agement and applause after solos,” says Mahoney. Canadian audiences are “vague.” he says. “In the club scene, people are more interest- ed in the martinis and cel- phones and the music gets ignored.” Mahoney, who performs Vednesdays at the new hatin on West Pender, hopes to change thar. Six years ago he started Connection Music, a series of music concerts that sees American musicians play in Vancouver with Canadian rhythm sections. The first concert featured an appearance by American recording artist and pianist Travis Shook at Presentation House in 1991 as part of the North Vancouver — Aris Council’s 25th anniversary cel- ebrations. Mahoney also helped bring Be-Bop and Destruction io the Purple Onion last year. This Fnday and Saturday, your. Out-of-town musicians stay at Mahoney’s North Vancouver home where there is a 16-track digital studio. Clubs remain a_ difficult venue to play, says Mahoney, but bringing in world-class tale ent could help change that. “There are no short cuts in the music industry,” says Mahoney. “If they (clubs) could generate funding for musicians, the level of music would go up and the level of audience support would improve. If the musicians aren’t happy the people can feel that.” Over at the Purple Onion, there’s a lineup every night of the week. Pineau says a whole new generation is being intro- duced to the artform by way of acid jazz and funk. But if musicians are “intro- spective and melodic,” he con- cedes, “they're gonna lose peo- ple to the higher energy let | Expires February 6, 1997 » Not valid with other offers. © Limit 1 coupon per couple & 3 coupons per party.
