By Layne Christensen Fashion Editor °Pink Cadillac, crushed velver seats, riding in the back, oozing down the street...” — Bruce Springsteen HOW did a cosmetics company turn the sub- ject of a rock anthem into a sales incentive for eager beauty consultants the world over? By turning the automobile into a “trophy on wheels.” There are 46 Mary Kay career cars cruising the streets of B.C. Surprisingly, not all are “pink. Only a handful are Cadillacs. Monica Noel of North Van has a red Pontiac Grand Am. So does Lions Bay resident Tia Berry. Berry is hoping to turn red into pink by August. Next step up in the cosmetics company’s automotive corporate ladder is the pink Grand Prix. Then there is the pink Cadillac. For Berry, a 31-year-old mother of three and a Mary Kay consultant for 14 months, the car is just ‘+ beginning. Vacation packages and diamond jewelry are among the rewards she and the approximately 16,000 other independent beauty consultants in Canada can expect 10 receive by mect- ing specific sales requirements. According to Mary Kay spokesman Christine Bodt, the Dallas-based cosmetics compa- ny awards nearly $28 million in Prizes annually. Berry calls them “Cinderella Sifis.” Mary Kay considers them just rewards for the company’s toy: performers. Donnz Izen of West Vancouver is driving around a 1997 pink Cadillac Seville. It’s her ninth car, her eighth Cadillac. (Ths: year she received a pink Buick, she calls an “off year.”) A Mary Kay consuttant for 19 years, Izen has always been in the pink. As one of the top 10 Mary Kay directors in Canada, she’s also seen her share of the prizes. At the company’s annual seminar in Toronto iast August, her rewards included « tip for nwo to Mexico and a gold watch set with 24 diamonds; plus the choice of a gold tennis bracelet sex with 36 full-cut dia- monds or a gold ring set with 21 diamonds. She chose the bracelet. Dozens of free trips and fist- fuls of jewelry are not her biggest incentive, says Izen. What is? “Warching women take a hold of their carcers.” In Izen’s case, most of the awards are based on the pertor- alr oo. Beauty consultants in the pink mance of a sales tam rather than personal sales. In fact, Izen - does very little selling. Instead, she averages 30 hours a week overseeing a sales force of 145-, women, who reside not oniy in B.C. but in the Okanagan; ” across thz Prairies and as far cast: as Tszunto. , As for her car, she wears it Eke a badge of honor.
