However, said Crist, car sizes are
increasing along with a trend towards the
use of minivans.

The resulting crunch in parking lots
across the district is the sound of car
doors knocking chips and dents out of
each other as drivers try and wriggle in
and out of tight spots.

Crist said escalating ICBC claims are
paid by every driver in the form of high-
er insurance premiums.

Council supported the change in
parking stall size by a 6-] margin with
only Coun, Janice Harris opposed.

The old council previously considered
a similar proposal from Crist and rejected
it after a staff report concluded district
parking stalls were comparable with other
municipalities in the Lower Mainland and
recommended against any increase in
size.

The larger-width parking stalls will
only apply to new development and can-
not be imposed on existing parking lots.
