The tee reduction, the spokesman said, may atfece an optometnst’s ability to bay new equipment of take con: Hnuing cducanion courses. Optometrists, NAssa ee therapists and physiotherapists are funded through the sup- plementary budget program, which also includes money paid te chiropractors and naturoparhs Canadian medicare only helps pay for medical doc- tors. The provincial wovern- ment through MSP pays the tees of health care providers whe aren't doctors through the supplementary budget program. Various health = care groups’ spokesmen said pro- jected budget overruns unis year can be attributed to carly releases of patients from hospitals, aging Saby boomers’ heath care peeds and the increased provincial population, The supplementary bad ger for massage therapists was amost SES million with a projected overrun of $1.24 million. The budget for phystotherapists was about $296 million with a project- ed budget deflaat of $1.35 milion. Optometrists have a budget of $28.6 million with a proiccted deficit of S12 saillion, ing by 11% all tees paid to physiotherapists retroactive to Now. 15. “The mood of North B Shore physiotherapists is cer- tainly one of great concern,” said Gunnel Gavin, who has a private physiotherapy clinic in North Vancouver. There are about 70 physio- therapists working on the North Shore and 2,100 in B.C. About half of them work in private-sector clinics. Gavin said that B.C. is the only province in| Canada to fund physiotherapy through MSP, but B.C. physiothera- pists are paid the lowest in the country. Gavin has been in private practice on the North Shore for 14 years. She specializes in physio- therapy treatments for patients with neurological problem such as Multiple Sclerosis and central nervous system injuries. The massage therapist fee reduction is a little more com- plicated. The Health Ministry will cover 100% of the billing by message therapists for the “primary” area of injury noted by referring doctors. The government will not pay for the “first additional” area treated between Dec. 15 and Dee. 30 and between Jan, 15 and Jan. 32. - A “second and third addi- tional” area treated will not be covered between Dec. 1 and March 31. A Massage Therapists As- sociation of B.C. spokesman said the goal of massage ther: apists is to serve their patients’ needs. A fee reduction hinders accomplishing that goal. Said massage — therapist Grace Dedinsky, “Patients have shown concern already.” Dedinsky has been a mas- sage therapist. in North Vancouver for 4% years. More than 100 massage therapists work on the North Shore among the more than 1,000 in B.C. About 17 of optometrists in B.C. practice ono the North Shore.
