‘Good Friday choir:

WEST VANCOUVER United Church is
the site of the North American premiere of
the St. John Passion of Johannes Weyrauch.

On Good Friday, April 5, the church's choir
will join the Vivaldi Chamber Choir in present-
ing this choral work that depicis Christ's Passion
and is an altemative to the inore widely per-
formed choral setting by J. S. Bach.

Like Bach, Weyrauch was a composer and
cantor who spent most of his creative life in
Leipzig where he, like Bach, died.

Unlike Bach, Weyrauch was a minimalist

composer whose telling of the story of Christ's
betrayal and crucifixion is shorter and mor: con-
templative. Weyrauch, who died in 1977, also
draws from medieval chant.

The work is scored for chorus, sniall orches-
tra and organ, and will be conducted by Manfred
Schneider of Dresden, a former pupil of
Weyrauch. Gerald van Wyck conducts the
church choir and orchestra.

The performance starts at 7:30 p.m. at 2062
