LEAR oA ARCADE ARTA EA A EDS NARRATE Col Irving was Dear Editor: Doug Collins’ defence of David Irving is journalism at its vilest, a picce of itresponsible misinforma- tion, For the record, David Irving's qualifications as a reputable histori- an are minimal. Irving is a “historian” in name only; he holds no academic degree in the discipline. Collins writes Irving's “expertise is formidable.” That much is true. Irving is an expert at manipulat- ing the evidence to make it do what he wants it to do. For example, it is well-docu- mented that he omitted lines from Goebbels diaries to support his the- ory that Hitler knew nothing about the death camps. What then, is frvinz’s “history” of the Holocaust? He has said, among other things, that the gas chambers at Auschwitz were “built by Poles after the war as Make tree choppers accountable Dear Editor: . - In February. 1993 three trees were destroyed in Lighthouse Park. They were 110 years old, 65 feet inside the park and were illegally cut down. - ’ The homeowner who paid to have them removed paid a $24,500 fine for his part in this event. The tree removal company, Beaver Tree Services Ltd. of North Vancouver, was paid to cut down these trees and received no fine or licence suspension. Is this right? -] beiieve that the regulations regarding ‘illegal tree remova! . should severely penalize both those who pay.to have it done and those who are paid to do it. ’Wesi Vancouver and the other North Shore municipalities should review their regulations to ensure that all parties to this kind of abuse of our parks are made accountable for their actions. WHERE DID IT GO? | know from summaries produced by the House of Commons that most of my costs were about the same as those cf other British Columbia MPs. However, my salaries bill was lower than average because my wife, Sue, works full time without pay in the con- stituency office. Staff salaries absorbed 5 $95,571.22 and office rent was $20,400. The final figure for my gen- eral office expenses will be around $58,000 although the exact total will not be available until aif of the March invoices make their way to the Ottawa summary. Office expenses included pnotocopier and fax, office phones and long distance charges, computer J upgrading, two new laser printers, cell-phone airtime, my weekly North Shore News report, public meetings, reimbursement for vehicle use, secu- tity and alarm services, insurance, stationery supplies, printing services, i and ail of the other everyday things that an office needs to function prop- erly. It tooks like the grand total of all expenditures will be just under $174,500.00, which is about $10,500 or 5.7% UNDER budget. Because | came in under budget and again did not spend any of the $5,000 furniture allowance, the House of Commons tules allow me to carry over the sur- plus into this year. However, | am NOT including this “carry over” in my budget planning for this year. | will treat it as an emergency fund in case | incur some unexpected costs. TRAVEL POINTS Each MP is allocated 64 “travel points" per year. These “travel points” are actually equivalent to 64 round ‘trip flights within Canada and can also be allocated by the MP to imme- diate family and staff. i used 38 travel points last year, which included 3 for my wife to accompany me to Ottawa during extended stays. All of my trips were to Ottawa and none of my unused trips will be carried over into this year. | do not personally use the airline mileage points | accumulate with all of this travel. | donate them to the Children’s Wish Foundation so that critically ill children can visit places like Disneyland. MPs can claim up to $6,000 per year for travel and accommodation costs in Ottawa. | applied for just under $3,200, considerably less than it actually cost me to stay in the Travelodge. Also, as promised, | donated 10% of my salary, $6,440, to the deficit reduction fund even though | am not happy with the way Mr. Martin is managing things. YOUR MONEY } make my budget public because it is your money that | am spending and | believe that you have a right to know where it is going.
