fl i 1 ! | i i ' 4 NV District foreshore needs local protection Dear Editor: Long-term planning to control “development and guarantee public use of and access to the foreshore in the District of North Vancouver, especially the Seymour and Deep Cove area is onthe agenda. At one time, West Vancouver faced a similar dilemma with their waterfront.. They are now. stuck ‘with a string of highrises perma- nently blocking their view. To avoid a similar scenario here, , I suggested that we sel up a com- ‘munity task force to work oul a pol- icy for the common good. [1 is not >, only a possible seawall we should consider, We should have a long- term policy for the use of: all the foreshore lands, This was: alse part ‘of my. suggestion. Other cities: had: _;fo do.the saine. . "+ AS far as East Seymour is con-«. cerned, ‘district staff in a previous “report, had already indicated that ‘Tand adjoining the waterfront could - be acqiired. gradually with little or no Cost-to. district taxpayers. It could be done by’ ptirchasing the homes as they become available, _ detaching a narrow strip of land . Wide;enough for a-sea-wall_ and ting. the: rest! tof the properties The district already owns a strip of land adjacent to the waterfront in one area. Such a scenario would forestall any attempt for acquisition of such lands for speculative purposes. But we must act soon, If we don’t. instead of controlling events, we will be controli¢d by them. The- value and subsequent assessments of these properties will continue: to increase far above aver- age. The developers will attempt to acquire them for rezoning to build high-rises or. multi-family dwellings at the least: _ To:swecien their offer, they will offer public access or # token strip for a seawall. Council, cager to salvage what they can, will go for it. But the community at large, particularly the people living behind these proper- lies, instead of looking at the inlet, will be looking at a string of high- rises. Short-sightedness usually exacts a price. With. the application for rezon- ing of the former Matsumoto prop- erty, the events: | described have started. Once a precedent has been set, the process will speed up. : Coun, Ernie Crist SEROUS One death: 2 lives lost Dear Editor: To saw oa oman die on Tuesday. He was hit by a van on Pemberton.
