silencing society?

Dear Editor:

fowas astounded by thy new
noise bylaw reported on the front
page of the North Share News on
Dee. 29, 1993,

It is no joke and is sure to have
long-reaching and serious implica-
tions for those who fall under its
jurisdiction.

My outdoor hobby is archery
and not shooting, so 1 don't have an

“axe to grind: however, it's what this
law leads to that concerns me,

There is no doubt that this new
bylaw will be used by some in their
attacks on others.

Any “thing” that nitkes a noise
that disturbs the public peace is
enough to allow such attacks. As
correctly identified in your article,
the “thing” could include a crying
baby. And believe me. there are
people out there who hate the ery-
ing of a baby.

The fact that councift has the
right to determine. -vhat disturbs the
enjoyment of the public amazes
me. ; :

What if some “nag” has it in for
a particular religious group and
uses the excuse that ihe sounds of
singing coming from the building
annoys him or her --- suddenly a
prosecution could arise.

Bylaws are no joke: the penal-
ties for infringement are serious.

The presence of vehicles bear-
ing the notice “bylaw enforcement”
prove that there are bureaucrats that
will lay charges. If they dont make
bylaw prosecutions then their jobs

Every year across Canada thou-
sands of similir “people-control
laws” are passed.

Itimay scent as if such laws can
never affect you as you sit in front
of your TV set with a pair of head
phones on, and do the bit of a law-
abiding citizen: however, eventual
ly there will be a time when some-
thing you or your family does vio-
hues same crazy aspect of one of
these new fiaws.

Then you or your family can
enjoy your day in court, losing your
money to defend yoursell or to pay
fines,

HW the people of Canada don't
start to stand up naw and speak out
then eventually the continuaney of
the propagation of Iiws such as this
will destroy all freedoms,

Dare Psay it? “All it takes for
evil te succeed is for cnough good
men to remain silent.”

An overly repressive noise
bylaw is the first step towards the
ongoing silencing of the conscience
of our society. Why run Canada
along the fines of a penal colony?
