Joy Metcalfe JOY TELLS Ait THERE WERE so many charity events held last week, each trying to outdo the other. Certainly the swinging soiree held last Friday evening probably attracted the cream of the busiress, social and financial crop, including the world famous heart surgeoa, Dr. Christian Bar- nard. This was the ultra- glamorous Face the World dinner party fundraiser, hosted by the ir- repressible Jacqui Cohen at her Point Grey waterfront palace. This was Jacqui’s second annual Face the World fundraiser and was graced with twice as many VIP guests, so many, in fact, that Jacqui had to build a platform over her pool to accommodate them and the crew from Umber- to’s, who, under Chef Gianni, created some of the tastiest lamb and pasta dishes. Cynthia Woodward in tailored biack and white, Carol Lee in seafoam green, Darcia Doman in a short Theodora-dress a la the Pepsi Uh-Huh girls, and Jacqui who was gowned in a Bob Mackie black chiffon, glittering with black and silver bugle beads, greeted the guests as they arrived. Dr. Barnard was there as a guest of the Properties’ Susie and Harry Moll. He'd been in town for business and pleasure, one of which was a flying fishing trip to the Queen Charlottes to Sonora Lodge. He is quiet, obviously in- telligent and very charming, ac- cording to my spies. Susie was in a white silk shan- tung with a red geometric pattern and covered with sparking se- quins, her bubbly personality as NORTH VANCOUVER’S Bob and Lily Lee at the Face the World party. COCKTAILS & CAVIAR effervescent as the sparklers on her fingers. Her finun- cier-husband Harry had just cele- brated his 50th birthday on a three-hour cruise up Indian Arm with some of his best pals like PR man Jack Lee, banker Nick Masse, Derek van Laare, Paddy McCleery, Pat Claridge, Baron Lee, Wally Dezura, Frank Ander- son and Keith Anderson. it was some party. Beverley Hauff wore a full- length, form-fitting strapless —- but who noticed the dress? ft was Beverley’s 115-carat cabuchon emerald neckpiece tha! got everyone's attention! The Brinkhaus girls were there, Gisella sporting a gorgeous black opal necklace, Kim (ex-model Kim Bonsall) flew in from Calgary and Dale took time from her busy Taffeta business to be there. They were all beautifully bejewelled in the latest Brinkhaus creations. Their handsome-shared escort was the cleft chinned George Shmerholtz, the brilliant sculptor, whose life-sized Killer Whale is the focal point of the Canadian Pavilion at Expo 92 in Seville, Spain, Soe and Dee Capozzi were on hand with their son, Patrick, and daughter-in-law, Robyn. Dee was attired in a three-piece white crepe de chine edged in silver while Robyn dazzled in an em- pire-waisted dress of black velvet. Robyn and Patrick are antici- pating a visit from the stork in early August and Joe and Dee have just moved from Vancouver to a beachfront home in Point Roberts. Mayor Gordon Campbell and his Nancy officially opened the charity event. Nancy was gowned ,in a short-fitted green sequinned dress with a backless back. John and Rebecca MacKay en- joyed the party. Rebecca, ina black tulle evening gown by Chanel, praised the designer’s gown as the best fashion invest- ment she has ever made. Peter Thomas, who knew just the right buttons to push, was the evening's energetic auctioneer. North Van’s Joanne and Arthur Griffiths were there along with the award-winning coach Pat Quinn and several of his Canuck players. The event was a fundraiser, in large part, for the worthy Canuck Place, the only freestanding hospice for children in North America. Out-of-towners included dap- Heel, pereol, trussardi otc., ate. Nicole, daughter of Sherrill and Woody MacLaren, is a veterinarian opthamologist, who is about to open her practice in this area. Mark Zigner, her beau, is in the gem business and is buying an- tque and estate jewelry here and in Victoria. He likes our town so much that he’s looking for a loca- tion to build an L.A.-style restau- rant. Last guest to arrive just before midnight was Super Mac, the head of McDonald’s Canada, George Cohon, who Mew in from Toron- to. George gave a new meaning to the phrase *‘fashionably late!”’ While all of the cheques aren't in as yet, Jacqui’s Face the World Foundation managed to raise ap- proximately $135,000 for this province’s needy projects... My trip to Alaska last week aboard the sleck and luxurious Regal Princess couldn’t have been better. And Alaska is breathtaking in its quaint heritage, the hospi- tality and friendliness of its peo- ple, and its spectacular and rugged pristine wilderness. A number of North Shore resi- dents joined me including North Vai’s Bob and Ruby Thomas who were celebrating their 42nd wed- ding anniversary. There was also Belvista's bridge player extraor- dinaire, golfer par excellence and a good friend, Winnie Wilkinson. We had a ball! My thanks to Capt. Cesare Ditel and to West Van's Michael Dreyer of Cruise Ship Centres. And to all those important gentiemen, a very happy Father’s Day ... Cheers!
