Hamersley Cottage

THIS HUMBLE cottage
was built as a residence for
the gardener who was to at-
tend to the grounds of
Langton Lodge, Col. Alfred
St. George Hamersley’s
estate, which was being
built at the same time at
350 East Second St.

It is a good example of a simple
worker’s cottage, with its wrap-
around full front verandah, and
square porch columns with carved

porch knees.

The roof is side-gabled with
duroid shingles, although it is
assumed to have been originally
covered in cedar shingles.

The gardener’s duty was to tend
the gardens of the estate and to
tame the forest into characteristic
English traditional gardens.

Adjacent to this cottage is
Hamersley Park, which still boasts
some of the cherry trees that

probably date back to the time of
construction of the cottage.

Other mature plants, shrubs,
and rosebeds still exist.

Both the Hamersley
Gardener's Cottage and
Langton Lodge are owned by
North Vancouver City.

This sketch was made on one of
the first bright sunny days in
January.

Even in winter with nothing in
bloom but the kale, it presented a
charming sight over the top of the
garden gate.
