agreement

on Howe

Sound road contract

A FINAL agreement has been
reached between the transporta-
tion and highways ministry and
North Vancouver-based Capilano
Highway Services for the provi-
sion of road and bridge
maintenance in the Howe Sound
service area for the next 29
months.

“Capilano Highway Services
has been providing road and
bridge maintenance in the Howe
Sound service area since 1988,”'
said Transportation and Highways
Minister Art Charbonneau. ‘‘The
extensive and competitive contract
renewal process has resulted in the
company being asked to continue
providing maintenance work for
the ministry in this service area."

He added that the company
“must keep the highways and
bridges of the Howe Sound service
area safe and in good condition
by meeting the high standards set
out in their contract.”

Charbonneau said that the
ministry, through its Quality
Assurance program, will make
sure maintenance standards are
met in all service areas.

The Howe Sound service area
covers 1,003 kilometres of high-
way and 113 bridges.

The area’s boundary extends
from North Vancouver and West
Vancouver to Birkenhead Lake
Park, taking in Squamish,
Garibaldi Highlands, Brackendale,
Whistler, Pemberton, Mount Cur-
rie, Birken, pare of Garibaldi
Park, Britannia Beach, Lions Bay
and Horseshoe Bay.

The ministry will announce the
value of the new contract with
Capilano Highway Services as
soon as maintenance contracts are
in place in all 28 service areas of
B.C

The value of the previous con-
tract in the Howe Sound area was
$22.4 million.
